A peace corps for kindness

Riley's Way Foundation was established by Mackenzie and Ian Sandler in 2014 to honor the life of their nine-year-old daughter, Riley Hannah Sandler. Today it is a peace corps for kindness, inspiring young people to build meaningful relationships with friends, mentors, and peers from all walks of life, and equipping young leaders to use kindness and empathy to drive positive change.

Ruckus was brought on for creative services, UX and UI design, and website development: a new digital home at rileysway.org built to encourage visitors to learn about Riley's story, give to the cause, and get involved in the movement she inspired.

02The Brief

A mission this big needed a digital home to match

The site had three jobs from the start. Tell Riley's story and the mission of kindness in a way that moves people to act. Make donating effortless with a world-class, one-click giving experience. And connect young leaders to the events, councils, and programs that put kindness into action across the community.

03The Process

Listen first, design second

Before a pixel moved, the project had a paper trail. A website creative brief, written in December 2018, captured goals, audience, and tone straight from the foundation. Workshop sessions with Riley's Way's own young leaders pressure-tested the message in their own words, and page-by-page design files carried the project from discovery to launch.

Three style tile concepts, built in Adobe XD, let the foundation react to real interface rather than abstraction. Each carried the same architecture through its own type, color, and navigation system, down to dropdowns, hover states, and footers: one airy and light with a marker-lettered wordmark, one fusing photography into dark chrome, one in soft spaced caps with a coral call to action. Every direction ran through desktop and mobile comps before one moved forward to build.

04The Design

Warm, human, trustworthy

The identity had to feel like a hug and a handshake at once. Ruckus paired a hand-lettered, joyful voice with a clean, confident structure, so the site reads as heartfelt to families and credible to partners. Playful, marker-drawn headlines carry Riley's spirit, a warm, hopeful palette of indigo, periwinkle, sky, coral, mint, and sunshine signals energy, youth, and belonging across every page, and clear navigation with clean type makes the mission easy to learn and act on.

05The Work

Give in a click

Generosity should never hit friction. Ruckus built a one-click FastAction donation experience with saved checkout details, the option to dedicate a gift in honor or memory, and a secure, guided three-step checkout, so a gift takes seconds, not minutes, from any device. Templates for programs, events, gallery, press, FAQs, and contact rounded out the build, alongside full donation and volunteer portals that run from amount to thank you.

The homepage carries a visitor from who Riley was to the movement she inspired, the mission, the programs, and a clear way to help, in a single scroll. Learn, give, and get involved each got a story-first home of its own, delivered as one warm, credible platform for Riley's Way.

“We envision a future where leaders value kindness and use it to build a better world.”
