A new era on College Hill

Hamilton College is one of America's oldest liberal arts colleges, chartered in 1812 and set on 1,300 acres in Clinton, New York. Known for its open curriculum, its motto Know Thyself, and one of the most loyal alumni communities in higher education, Hamilton entered a new era in 2024 with the arrival of Steven Tepper, its 21st president in 212 years. Ahead of the college's December 2024 donor dinner, Ruckus was engaged to write, direct and produce the film at the heart of the evening, a cinematic tribute to two centuries of alumni giving.

Two hundred years of generosity, one room

The dinner fell within the opening months of the new president's tenure, so the film had to set the tone for what comes next. The room would be filled with alumni and donors who lived these spaces for decades, and generic campus b-roll would never move them. The story had to be theirs. Alumni gifts built the modern campus, and the creative challenge was to make that change visible, so donors could literally watch what their giving made possible.

Archival photographs, held up to the present

Ruckus opened the engagement with a full creative kick-off, presenting three original concepts for the dinner film. The chosen direction fused the archival photography of Pictures of the Past with the What If chorus at the heart of The Space to Wonder. The studio team mined decades of Hamilton's own history, from Hamiltonian yearbooks spanning 1964 to 1989 to mid-century campus film, sourcing the exact photographs that could be re-aligned with their locations today.

Each archival print is held up to camera and matched frame for frame with the living campus, peering through time in one continuous shot. Every photo pull-away reveals the same spot, evolved and bustling with life, and the technique makes the argument no voice-over could: alumni giving is visible everywhere on College Hill. In October 2024 the team filmed across the 1,300-acre campus in ten-hour production days, from drone passes at sunrise to President Tepper himself on camera, with a What If script written by Ruckus and cast across every Hamilton generation.

Delivered end to end in seven months

Post-production ran through structured review rounds in Frame.io to picture lock, color and audio. The 4:08 film premiered in December 2024 as the centerpiece of the donor dinner, played to the college's most devoted supporters in the first months of President Tepper's tenure. Delivered end to end in seven months, it was mastered in 16:9 and 9:16 with a branded three-minute cutdown and finished campus photography, so the story lives on at hamilton.edu, YouTube and across social channels.
