KELLWOOD - CITY BLUES
A new label, born in the city
Kellwood is the American apparel company behind proven consumer brands like Democracy and Wit & Wisdom. In 2024, it set out to create something new: City Blues, an urban-inspired women's fashion line built to deliver accessible luxury, pairing premium craftsmanship with attainable price points.
Ruckus was engaged to take City Blues from business plan to market: the brand story and positioning, the visual identity and guidelines, the ecommerce experience, the launch marketing engine, and the studio productions that filled it with imagery. Kellwood wanted more than deliverables; it wanted a collaborative partner accountable for both the creative and the measurable outcomes of bringing a new label to market.

A brand from zero, in a saturated market
Fashion is saturated with high-priced designer wear on one end and fast fashion that compromises on quality on the other, leaving modern, budget-conscious women without a real option in between. City Blues existed as a business plan and a manufacturing capability. It needed everything else: a story, an identity, a storefront, and a way to reach the women it was designed for.
Five pillars, an essence, and a tagline that leads the site
Ruckus built a full brand story program: storytelling framework, market positioning, core values, tone of voice, mission, vision, essence, and tagline. Five pillars anchor the brand, inspiration, attainability, versatility, urban influence, and authenticity. The essence, Love at First Wear, captures pieces women didn't know they needed and can't live without, and the tagline, Own Your Story in Style, ties fashion to confidence and self-expression.
The visual identity was codified in the 2025 brand guidelines: stacked and horizontal lockups, a CB extension mark built as a pixel-grid monogram, color, typography, file standards, and social media rules, extending to packaging touchpoints from garment tags to shopping bags. Cormorant, an elegant high-contrast serif, leads headlines, while Lexend keeps body copy open and modern against a palette of dark blue, violet blue, cream, and black.
A storefront and a funnel, built before the first order
Ruckus designed and built the City Blues store end to end on Shopify: six core page designs plus internal templates, collection filtering, cart and checkout, e-gift cards, and transactional email, QA'd page by page. The launch engine followed, channel builds across Google, Meta, and TikTok with conversion tracking, ongoing paid media management, curated Instagram and Facebook feeds, and an influencer and email program running under one roadmap.
Ruckus also directed, produced, and shot the imagery that brought City Blues to life at launch: an editorial production with a full crew and professional models, and a three-day ecommerce studio production covering 70 to 90 looks for the launch assortment, with hundreds of images retouched and mastered for the site.
Live in market, and covered by the trade press
City Blues launched in 2025 at cityblues.com, with the Ruckus-written strategy running word for word: the brand essence leads the site's welcome line, and the mission statement anchors the story page. WWD introduced City Blues to the industry as a city-inspired fashion line at attainable price points, and the partnership continues through a 12-month marketing engagement into mid-2026, with the 2026 strategic plan already delivered.
